Ages 13+ Join us for an in-depth nature sketching course from a Virginia Master Naturalist. Learn drawing techniques including color blending, shading, and perspective while practicing your plein-air sketch skills on the trail. Each class is different, and participants are encouraged to attend multiple classes. All art supplies are included in the registration fee. Program takes place indoors with specimens during inclement weather. Meet at the Visitor Center. Join a Virginia Master Naturalist on a hike through moonlit woodlands while using bionic ears to amplify the sounds of night. Stay after for a campfire and s’mores, depending on weather. Using real ghost hunting equipment, you’ll visit some of the site’s haunted locations. Staff will share chilling historical accounts and explain the paranormal meaning behind the name of the preserve. Sa 6:30-7:30pm 5/10 $7 367509-01 Forest Bathing Ages 13 + Relax and recharge by connecting with the natural world under the direction of a Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide. Enjoy positive health effects including increased immune function, lowered stress levels, and improved mood and mental clarity. Participants will be guided through a series of invitations to connect with nature through the senses. The walk will be about one mile and will end with a forest tea, an herbal blend of locally foraged plants. Meet at the Visitor Center. Learn the basics of bird identification and what to look for in the field so that you can confidently call yourself a “birder”. Binoculars NOT required. Each participant will take home their own field notebook and local bird list. Class includes field time on the trails, rain or shine. Meet at the Education Complex. Sa 8:00-10:00am 3/1 $5 367786-01 Woodcock Walk Ages 10+ Learn about the mysterious American Woodcock and venture out on the trails for a chance to view their unique “sky dance” mating ritual. Ages 2-6 Join us for experiential learning and hands-on fun outdoors! Every first Thursday of the month we explore a different nature theme through unstructured play and trail hikes. Program fee is per preschool-age participant; parents/guardians are free. Meet in the Education Complex. We explore nature stories and wildlife topics each month through interactive hands-on play and crafts. Storytime takes place outdoors on the 4th Tuesday of each month. After storytime, we’ll go on an easy walk in the woods or hang out in the exploration zone. In the event of rain, meet in the Education Complex. Registration is appreciated but not required.
