Season of Trees Ages 3-6 Why do trees change color in the Fall? Why are leaves green? Use your senses to investigate how trees adapt to changing weather and light. We will start with a seated discussion with hands-on artifacts, followed by a short nature hike in the woods. Every team will meet at the Hanson Park Nature Center for a quick training. Afterwards, it is up to each team where they should look in Hanson Park for the highest biodiversity. Scarecrow Contest All Ages Funny, scary, or silly – all scarecrows welcome! All scarecrows will be unveiled at our Halloween in the Park Event on 10/25, where they will be voted on in our annual Scarecrow Contest! The winner will win a Halloween-themed prize! Materials will be available for pick up on Monday, October 14 and will be due by Wednesday, October 23 by 5:00pm. F 10/14-10/23 Free 162703-01 Franklin Park Trout Derby & Fishing Expo All Ages Join us at the pond for a morning of family fun and fishing. Fun and educational booths, local and national organizations with their latest fishing and boating gear, trout fishing, practice casting areas and magnet fishing for kids will be available! Volunteers will be on hand to teach you how to bait, cast, and hook your catch. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone over the age of 16 years must have a valid Virginia State Freshwater fishing license to participate. Limited fishing poles and bait will be available to use. All participants must be registered. Planetarium - Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Ages 5 & under What is a star and why do they twinkle? Answer these questions and more in this special preschool planetarium. This portable planetarium is similar to entering a small, dark movie theater and may not be advisable for all children. The planetarium is usually experienced by sitting on a cushion or lying on the floor. Chairs are available upon request to hansonpark@loudoun.gov. Registration is required for all participants; no drop-ins are available. Each child must be accompanied by only one adult. In this talk, ethnobotanist Nan McCarry will tell you the story of how we entered the age of agriculture. This talk will give you fresh insight into our connection with the natural world.
